HCI came to me asking for help with their communications. They needed an identity that would differentiate them from other similar organizations, yet communicate healing in an authentic way. Betsy, founder and executive director--and a Ph.D. in earth sciences, explained to me that healing isn't an individual event, it's happens in communities and relationships. We discussed the nautilus shell as a symbol to express self-propagating healing. Healthy people create healthy communities which create more healthy people, just as the chambers of the shell get bigger and allow more life to flourish.
After designing the mark and a suite of business cards, I designed collateral for several events and finally worked collaboratively on a basic fundraising brochure with Waterstone Global. We wanted to continue with the shell motif and capture the joy and innocence of living the life we are all meant to live. The photos of the boys at the beach perfectly captured what we hoped to communicate.
